Weimin Tang was born in 1971 in Anyang, Hunan, China, one of three children. When he was five he visited his mother's office where he saw one of his mother's colleagues drawing a pig on a piece of paper, using a pen. Then, he took out a pen and started his own drawing. It wasn't very successful, but continued to sketches on blank margins of textbooks. Weimin then started to copy prints of Chinese paintings. When in middle school, Weimin began to paint postage stamps that were so close to real ones that they often tricked teachers and classmates. At eighteen years old, he passed the national college admission exam and went to the Art Department of Hunan Normal College, majoring in oil painting. From this he determined that painting was not only a skill, but more of an expression of thought and spirit. He also began carefully observing the traditional culture and its vision in art. He scored excellent in tests during college study and left several art works in the university's collection. After graduation Weimin Tang worked in a variety of jobs including highway construction, government employee and teaching middle school. During this period he did not paint much. He opened an art studio and began teaching art in late 1993. During the next seven years he married, taught art and attended the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art for a year. He also received a prestigious award from the academy for one of his paintings. This painting is now a part of the Beijing Museum of Fine Art collection. His works have also received critical acclaim in Canada and the United States over the ensuing years. Tang is a practicing Zen Buddhist. He incorporates many symbols of Buddhism within his work. Tang is currently living in a monastery close to his home town. This is important for him, as he strives to be spiritually clean in order to address his work as a painter. It also allows him to be surrounded by the objects that he depicts in his paintings. Objects representative of ancient China are a common theme in his works. Wei Min considers painting as a way to bring harmony, balance and beauty to the world. His work has won many prestigious awards and has been featured in many art publications. Meyer Gallery is honored to represent the classical and masterful paintings of Weimin Tang.
