Dirk Meyer, November 28, 1964 – September 10, 2019

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear friend and gallery owner, Dirk Meyer. It was with Dirk’s eye and vision that Meyer Gallery was established in Santa Fe over 30 years ago, and it was his passion that molded the gallery into what it is today – a leading force in Santa Fe’s art market for contemporary representational art, and premier destination for collectors and artists from around the globe. While we are deeply saddened by this loss, we are thankful for the opportunity to celebrate Dirk’s life and legacy at Meyer Gallery for years to come.

Dirk was born in 1964 in Park City, Utah, where his parents founded Meyer Gallery’s original location when Dirk was just a year old. Growing up around artists, gallerists and collectors, Dirk developed a deep appreciation for the arts from a very young age. Twenty years after opening their Park City gallery, which still operates today under the ownership of Dirk’s sister, Susan Meyer, Darrel and Jeri Meyer expanded their gallery presence to Santa Fe. They entrusted the business to young Dirk, who, in his early twenties at the time, went on to curate, staff, manage and grow the gallery’s roster to eventually represent over 50 artists. Dirk strongly believed in supporting the visions of young and emerging artists and had a keen eye for new talent, thus sparking the careers of many now-established Santa Fe painters and sculptors. Per his request, a portion of Dirk’s estate will go toward student art scholarships, continuing his life’s mission to nurture the careers of young artists.

Dirk’s impact on the art world reaches beyond Canyon Road; his passion for art combined with his love for travel led to Meyer Gallery’s international success as he cultivated relationships with several artists from Mexico, whose work the gallery continues to represent. In 1996 he went on to open a gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona, which he sold after ten years of successful business. Meyer Gallery continued to be a stronghold in Santa Fe under the direction of Dirk’s business partner John Manzari, leading to the establishment of Meyer East. The development of Meyer East was a realization of Dirk’s goal to have two distinct galleries at the base of Canyon Road - one focusing on traditional work while the other took a more contemporary approach. Ultimately, the two spaces consolidated into the dynamic and remarkable Meyer Gallery that exists today.

Dirk was an exceptional gallery owner and art dealer but he was also a beloved brother, son, and friend. He was playful, smart, funny, and devoted. He will be sorely missed in our art community and in our lives. Thank you for your heartfelt condolences and messages; Dirk’s spirit lives on in our hearts and through the work of the artists he supported.
